Babeș-Bolyai University has a history dating back to 1578, when the prince of Transylvania, Ştefan Báthory, requested the consent of Pope Gregory XIII in order to establish a Jesuit college in Cluj. In 1959, the Romanian University of Cluj and the Hungarian University were merged to create today’s institution.

Babeș-Bolyai University has become, over time, the emblem of success of Cluj and the country. It is a living, dynamic and constructive institution, well integrated in society and with an eye on the future, which it can design, prepare and build. An institution that cannot be conceived otherwise than in the framework that consecrated it, that of universitas magistrorum et scholarium (“community of masters and disciples”), of communion of teachers and students, of “corporation of equals”, with the exclusive desire of innovation and knowledge.
